Tuesday's Matchup
Kobe Bryant vs Michael Jordan - Stats
Both Kobe and Michael have are very similar players. The type of game they play is very similar, both won their championships under the great Phil Jackson, and both are and were the best of their decade. For my entire life Michael Jordan was my favorite player and I will choose him over anyone in any toss up. Now I am not blind to real talent because Jordan is and will always be my guy. I still truly beleive he is the better basketball player. So enough with the talk, this post is meant to compare two of the games greatest in a statistical manor. Pick of the Night
Oklahoma City Thunder +10 at Los Angeles Lakers
Kevin Durant will share the stage with Kobe in the bright lights of LA tonight. The Lakers look even better than they were one year ago when they won the Championship. The Thunder are the leagues most improved team with a record hovering around .500 apposed to the 3 or 4 wins they had at this point last season. I predict the young future stars of the Thunder will put up a good fight tonight in a loss but keep it close. For this selection I am going with the Thunder to lose by less than ten and win with the spread.
Thunder over Lakers - Scuttlebutt record - (9-10)
Last Night's Pick, Redskins +3 over Giants, resulted in a Loss with the Giants dominating the Redskins 45-12.

Pick of the Night
Giants -3 at Redskins
No one should bet on this game. It is a complete toss up. The Giants look good one week and put up points every way possible, and the next they score less than ten and look like a Rams or Buccaneers team. The Redskins have made a second half surge in terms of quality of play even though the wins have not shown up like they had hoped. Ever since Zorn was stripped of his play calling duties, the Redskins have been a respectable team and have gone down to the wire to the best of teams including the Saints. With such an unpredictable game to try to predict I am going with the Skins at home to take care of the Giants getting 3 points.
Skins over Gmen - Scuttlebutt Record - (9-9)
Last pick, Colts -3 over Jaguars, resulted in a Win with the Colts winning a close one 35-31

Pick of the Night
Indianapolis Colts -3 at Jacksonville Jaguars
The Colts and the Jaguars give us our best match up of the year on Thursday Night Football. The only question for me in who to choose is how much the Colts starters are going to play, mainly just Peyton. Caldwell seems to avoid the press and has given little indication of who will play. He did say he is going to play whoever is healthy. Peyton is healthy therefore I am going with the Colts. The Colts offense has been great on the road this season scoring 27 points or more in all but one of their away games. This coupled with the questionable status of the Jaguars best, maybe only, down field threat in Mike Sims-Walker gives the Colts a good chance of covering the spread tonight.
Colts over Jaguars - Scuttlebutt Record - (8-9)
Last pick, Thunder +2 over Mavericks, resulted in a loss with Dallas pulling away late in a 100-86 victory

Thursday's Bad Ass
Mickey O'Neil
Rocky Balboa, Clubber Lang, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Anderson Silva. Just about everyone knows all of these great fighters, but what they don't know is that one single man could easily beat each and everyone of them with the greatest of ease. That man is Mickey O'neil. Mickey may not sound like the smartest person or come across as the strongest guy, but he drops the largest and toughest of foes like a sack of potatoes with one single punch. Mickey's fists are like the Golden Gun in the classic Golden Eye game. One shot kills.
This act alone qualifies Mickey as a Bad Ass, but its the way he handles himself outside of the ring, backyard, or gypsy town that really catches your attention. Mickey could take his talent public and become the greatest and probably richest fighter of all time but he insists on living in the same small trailer park gypsy town to care for his long time friends and mother. He doesn't want to fight but will in circumstances that mean helping out someone who needs it. O'neil walks around with "little boy" and "fat boy" at the end of his wrists, but his target isn't Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is 7 foot 300 pound bohemiaths.
Pick up a copy of Snatch today and you will agree that Mickey O'neil is in fact a Bad Ass. Heres to you Mickey, we may not always understand your gibberish talk but what we do understand is you are Bad Ass!

Why we love sports
Clumsy Big Men
Big men in basketball amaze me. These guys, as basketball players, grew up their whole lives with a basketball in their hands. Playing AAU ball, on high school teams, and in the driveway with siblings, yet when they are in college and the NBA they suddenly lose all skill in handling a basketball. Dribbling, passing, and just generally holding on to a basketball are the basic bare bones skills it takes to play basketball at a grade school level. That is why it is so entertaining, and yes sometimes frustrating, to watch a big man with the ball in his hands NOT within five feet of the basket.
Its those times where the big bumbling center has to help break a press and catches the ball at mid court. Suddenly his feet have turned to cement and his brain goes hits the snooze button. 90% of the time he will travel on his first step, usually not called especially in the NBA, then he precedes to what some would call walk/run down court. His legs are now similar to that of a chicken and his face has the expression of a six year old who is hiding his newly soiled pants.
Watching a clumsy big man on the court makes us, the average fan, feel better about our own skills at the same time bringing a large smile to our face. Clumsy big man we thank you, for you are another reason why we love sports.

Dallas Mavericks -2 at Oklahoma City Thunder
One of the brightest young stars in the league, Kevin Durant, gets the opportunity to showcase himself on national TV tonight. The Mavericks are coming to town and the trio of Jeff Green, Russel Westbrook, and Kevin Durantula will prove they are all rising stars and a rising team. The Thunder are playing great basketball and have a very tough test in the Mavericks tonight. Dallas isn't getting too many points but I have confidence in the home crowd and team. Thunder will reign supreme tonight.
Thunder over Mavericks - Scuttlebutt - (8-8)
Last pick, Lakers -10 over Bulls, resulted in a loss with the Lakers only winning by 9, 96-87.

Los Angeles Lakers -10 at Chicago Bulls
Phil Jackson helped build both of these teams dynasties but it is the Lakers that are enjoying success in the league lately. The defending champion Lakers could be the best team in the NBA right now and face off against the very underachieving Bulls. The Bulls look closer to a lottery pick than a playoff spot and have little chance of winning this game. As much as I love my Bulls, I got to go with Kobe and his Lakers even with the Bulls getting 10 points.
Lakers over Bulls - Scuttlebutt Record - (8-7)

Lebron caught plagiarizing
Sharp Shooter
Above is an image of Ben Gordon's trademark hand gesture after hitting a three pointer. Ben Gordon has been doing this for years in Chicago and now in Detroit. Last night Lebron hit a three and did this exact same thing. Now its fine to copy something as long as you give credit where credit is due. Until he does, Gordon is getting robbed. The real crime here isn't that Lebron is being cocky, showing off, or even stealing Ben Gordon's gesture, it is the fact that kids everywhere will do this gesture when they manage to make an outside shot and credit it to Lebron having know clue of the true originator. Tsk Tsk Lebron, Tsk Tsk.

Why we love sports
The Dagger
There is nothing more enjoyable in sports then when the announcer yells "_______ with the Dagger!". Especially if it is your favorite team. The dagger, for those who are currently scratching your head, is when one team makes a play (most common in basketball) that in essence ends the game. Examples include....
The "thanks for trying but NO" Dagger
This dagger usually is followed by a lot of exhales and sighs of relief from fans. Your team built up an early lead and have lead comfortably throughout. But all of a sudden a funny thing happens on the way to the finish line. The opposition begins grinding away at the lead and next thing you know you look up from your fridge and your up by 4 points rather than 14. This is a scary moment in time. So much racing through your mind. Why was our bench in so early? Will we ever hit another shot? How will I ever come up with the money? But before you turn off your phone to avoid any human contact for the rest of the night, the dagger is dagged (dagged?). With about 2 minutes to go and the lead shrinking like wrap, your team gets a key defensive stop and hits a big three in transition to increase the lead back to where a comeback is near impossible. Gus Johnson yells something about "The Dagger!" and everyone is happy again.
The "everyone is gonna remember me" Dagger
This dagger comes in a game where you have no time to head to the kitchen for last nights leftovers. In a game like this the Lead Changes and Ties stat will pop up above the bottom line numerous times. Concession sales are down in a game like this as no one can bare the thought of leaving for just a minute. The dagger is approaching but no one is really sure even what side is going to nail it. One team will pull away to about a two possession lead, enough of a lead where the losing team knows they can't waste too many more possessions. This is when the team doing the dagging (dagging?) gets a steal, rushes down the court, and throws one down, similar to that of Jerome, and draws the foul putting the game out of reach and spinning the momentum their direction. The player responsible for the this dagger will end up on front pages of newspapers and talked about for at least a couple days. Again, "DAGGER!" is yelled loudly for all to hear.
The "Ok theres, the game is over now, can we go home yet?" Dagger
This dagger is more common in football or baseball (the term dagger seems to be underused in these two sports) than in basketball. A team builds a comfortable lead and seems to be teetering on Mount This Game is Over. There is still a chance for a comeback but it has to be made soon. In baseball this might happen in a 5 - 1 game in the 6th inning. In football this might happen in a 24 - 10 game midway through the third quarter. In baseball the Dagger is usually nailed by a bat and lands in the stands. Perhaps with two outs Prince Fielder gets a hold of one and sends it to Souvenir City and the lead is now somewhere around 7 instead of 4. In football this might come on a kick off return or long Touch Down run that puts one team up by about three scores. "Dagger!" may not be yelled at this point but everyone and their cab driver knows the the deal is done.
The "Got a little excited there" Dagger
This is a Dagger faux pas. An announcer gets a little too excited and emphatically yells "WITH THE DAGGER!" as a ridiculous tomahawk is thrown down in the face of some European born player with 4 minutes left to play before the TV timeout. Little does the announcer realize that the lead is only 7 points and there are some sharp shooters on the other squad. With in the next two minutes the game is once again tied and the team that supposively put the dagger into the hearts of the opposition, is intentionally fouling and watching their victory slip away one free throw at a time.
So next time you yell "Kobe with the Dagger!" remember, this is why we love sports.

(12)Connecticut Huskies -1 vs (4)Kentucky Wildcats
Tonight, right after Modern Family of course, The Uconn Huskies host the undefeated SEC power Kentucky Wildcats. Everyone knows about the famed Freshman at this point, John Wall, but Uconn's guards are going to be the key to this game. Jerome Dyson and Kemba Walker could be the top back court in the nation and they will prove it tonight. John Wall will do his best to keep his cats undefeated but in the end it will be the depth and guard play of Uconn that will knock off the number 4 team in the nation tonight. I have a feeling we will see these two teams play again in March.

Tuesday's Matchup
Gerhart vs Ingram for Heisman
The two students who look to have the best shot at winning the Heisman are both running backs. Tebow and McCoy both had less than stellar seasons compared to years past and with all the credit in the world to Ndamukong Suh, it is next to impossible for a purely defensive player to win the Heisman.
The number one debate in who should win the Heisman is comparing a players stats and the competition he faced in acquiring those stats. Gerhart supporters tell doubters to look at the numbers and there is no question he is the Heisman winner. Ingram supporters look at Gerhart's monster statistics and say it is because of the poor competition.

To try and solve this we are going to look at each RBs stats vs the teams they played. We will look at the average rushing yards given up by each team that each running back faced and subtract that from what they got against them. The same will be done with touchdowns. Next, add up the total numbers and this will be their Above Average Season Stats (AASS).
Of course negative numbers mean they rushed for less than what the team averages giving up. So closest to a positive total is the better stat.

Gerhart rushed for a more impressive 97.9 yards less than the teams he faced game up per game and rushed for an astounding 7.08 more touchdowns than the teams he faced gave up per game
From this analysis Gerhart should easily win the Heisman. His overall season numbers are a lot better in one less game than Ingram.
1736 yrds to 1542 yrds
26 TDs to 15 TDs
When leveling the competition, Gerhart's Above Average Season Stats are much better than Ingram.

Sacramento Kings +8.5 at New Orleans Hornets
The Kings are by far the surprise team of the season so far. First year man Tyreke Evans is playing like a vet for a team missing its lone star Kevin Martin. Brandon Jennings has to watch his back as Evans looks to be climbing over it to lead the rookie of the year race. The Hornets on the other hand have struggled all year. Firing their head coach early on and losing Chris Paul have not helped. Paul is back from injury but the Hornets still don't look like the same team from two seasons ago. The Kings win this one even without the spread. Getting 8.5 I have a lot of confidence in picking Sacramento tonight.
Kings over Hornets - Scuttlebutt Record - (7-6)
Last night's pick, Knicks +3.5 over Trailblazers, resulted in a Win with the Knicks rolling to a 93-84 win.

Portland Trailblazers -3.5 at New York Knicks
The Trailblazers are starting the first game of the rest of their new season. That is the season without Oden. Oden's kneecap is not cooperating with the team and will keep him out likely for the rest of this season. Just as Oden was starting to learn to play without fouling and showing aggression offensively, he gets a bad break and will now be a cheerleader from here on out. Portland will be trying new rotations in tonights game as they try to find what will work or not work from here on out. The Knicks are on what some might call a hot streak. Well for Knicks standards of temperature measurement they are hot. Knicks win this game even without the spread.
Knicks over Trailblazers - Scuttlebutt Record - (6-6)
Last Friday's pick, Bulls +13 over Cavaliers, resulted in a Loss with the Cavaliers covering the spread winning the game 101-87

Play of the Week (last two weeks)
Brandon Marshall showing that he is a better Wide Receiver with one hand then most receivers are with two.
Yes this play happened last Thursday night on Thanksgiving. Yes that is over a week ago. Because of last weeks holiday there was no play of the week last Friday. Marshall's incredible catch represents a split in the two weeks. In a game Denver had to win to prove to us and themselves that they are a playoff caliber team, Marshall and the Denver D stepped it up and got a nice victory of the sinking Giants.
